You walk into your pet’s cancer center, and you are immediately greeted with your name and a warm smile. Your dog runs right to his favorite nurse for a snack, and you check him in without any concern. When he’s in with the nurse, the reception area is yours alone. It’s comfortable, with relaxing music and adorable portraits of current patients framed on the walls. Before I founded Treeline Vet, I was an attending oncologist at several large corporate specialty hospitals. Of course, these locations provided cancer care, but they did so in sterile hospital environments. My clients were always stressed out, and walking into a large, inefficient, and impersonal clinical setting made their anxieties even worse. The receptionists were frazzled and didn’t have the bandwidth to recognize and connect with my regular patients. Pet owners could not communicate directly with the cancer team. Phone calls were often answered by robo-answering systems. The loud waiting room was a menagerie of animals, pacing clients, and pets in emergency situations. The chaos added unnecessary anxiety to even the most routine visits.
